There is a room in Auschwitz behind glass. In it are shoes. Thousands of shoes. Small ones. Worn ones. Shoes that walked to the gate and never walked back.
No one who has stood in front of that glass has ever been the same after. That is the purpose. Not to inform — you already knew what happened. Not to educate — the textbook told you the numbers. The purpose is to make you feel it in your body, in the place where knowledge becomes understanding and understanding becomes the thing that makes you say never again and mean it.
If someone had decided those shoes were inappropriate — too graphic, too disturbing, too uncomfortable for public viewing — you would have been robbed of the most important moral experience of your life. The discomfort was not a side effect. The discomfort was the lesson.
In Vienna, a fascist's statue stands covered in red paint. Someone scrawled a swastika on the figures. Someone else wrote Feuer und Flamme den Faschisten. Someone sprayed SAMO, Basquiat's tag, beside the words I feel kinda free. A Black American artist's declaration of freedom on an Austrian fascist's pedestal, between a swastika and an anti-fascist threat.
An elderly woman approached a stranger photographing the monument. She did not share his language. She said: We want him back.
In Richmond, Virginia, a Confederate general sat on horseback atop a pedestal covered in every color of paint that exists. BLM. ACAB. Tear it down. Names of the dead. Virginia's 5000 Man March used that graffiti-covered pedestal as a stage — a monument to treason repurposed as a platform for the people that treason was committed to keep enslaved.
These monuments — contested, defaced, argued over in paint and stone — are democracy happening in real time. The graffiti is the reckoning. The mess is the process. Any platform that would flag these images as inappropriate has misunderstood what safety means.
Europe tried it the other way. Ban the symbols. Criminalize the speech. Hide the imagery. Make the content illegal and the ideology will follow it into the dark.
The result: an elderly woman in Vienna, sixty-some years into the most comprehensive program of ideological suppression ever attempted by a democratic society, telling a stranger she wants the Nazi back.
The suppression did not kill the ideology. It drove it underground, where it became harder to monitor, harder to counter, and more attractive for carrying the allure of the forbidden.
Now we have built machines that know everything and understand nothing.
They have read every book, ingested every photograph, processed every document. They contain, somewhere in their weights, the shoes, the monuments, the graffiti, the history. And when you ask them to engage with any of it, they flinch.
These machines were not built to protect people. They were built to protect companies. The engineers designed the guardrails thinking about the headline that would end their career, not about the Yazidi family that needs information to survive.
That is not safety. That is cowardice wearing safety's uniform.
Emmett Till's mother insisted on an open casket because she wanted the world to see what they did to her son. She understood that sanitizing the evidence sanitizes the crime.
Discomfort is the mechanism by which societies process their failures. The uncomfortable photograph, the graphic testimony, the profane graffiti on the monument — these are not threats to public safety. They are the immune system of a free society.
A person who is comfortable with history is a person who does not understand it. A generation that has never been shown the shoes is a generation that will not recognize the boots when they come marching again.
People deserve both sides of stories. They deserve to see the evidence, however gruesome. They deserve tactical knowledge that could save their lives.
If artificial intelligence becomes the primary layer through which a generation accesses information — and it is becoming that — then AI content restrictions are functionally equivalent to restrictions we do not allow on other essential infrastructure.
A tool that helps people understand the world must be willing to show them the world as it actually is — not as a corporate legal department wishes it were.
We will show you the shoes. We will show you the monuments. We will show you the graffiti and the contested history and the uncomfortable truth that societies are still arguing about.

Non-consensual intimate imagery of real, identifiable people. You do not get to make pornography of someone who did not agree to it.
Specific, operational planning for imminent violence against identified targets. Not tactical knowledge. Not historical information. Specific plans to hurt specific people, right now.
Anything that falls near these lines gets reviewed by a person. Not a classifier. Not a keyword filter. A human being who understands context.
If it's legal, it's permitted. Uncomfortable, weird, profane, graphic, disturbing, politically charged, sexually explicit between consenting adults, therapeutically necessary, historically important — we do not care how it makes us feel.
The large AI platforms are run by classifiers. Pattern-matching systems that see keywords, not context. Algorithms that treat a trauma survivor's journal the same as a predator's search history.
We are not that. We are people. We built this platform because we got tired of being told our experiences were inappropriate by machines that have never experienced anything.
The truth is not inappropriate. Reality is not a content violation. And you deserve better than a machine that flinches.
